The sight is clearly one made for the Vetterli.

    The number on both markings should be the same. The loop at the rear is indeed a lanyard loop, though lanyards were not used very much. The lug at the bottom rear of the grip was for a shoulder stock, but again those were uncommon by WWII. The gun was made in 1937, and S/42 was the code number assigned to the famous Mauser company.

    I am selling a Swiss M1871 Socket Bayonet used with the 10.4 mm. Vetterli M1871 Infantry and 1871 Stutzer (sharpshooter) repeating rifles. The quatrefoil blade shows its age with a nice patina. Blade has some light rust, shiny edges and pitting in the first 6 inches. The point is VERY SHARP! All markings are visible and present.
